This is the first year Arviat has taken part in the highly-successful international program. Tonight students learned how to install Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements on the computers.
Adobe Youth Voices is the Adobe Foundation’s global initiative to increase creativity, which we believe is critical to prepare young people to be the problem solvers, critical thinkers, and leaders of tomorrow.
Youth develop original media that highlights an issue they care about, identify solutions, and in the process foster critical creative skills and a passion to make a difference. AYV ignites young people’s creative confidence – the ability to harness creative skills to solve problems – using advanced digital media tools and tested storytelling techniques. With greater creativity, and a greater belief in their own abilities, young people will be more engaged in their education and better prepared for a fast-changing global economy.
"It's an amazing experience to be able to learn this new software," said Nunavut Arctic College graduate Manasie Thompson. He's one of the youth mentors this year. "This is something that will help a lot of younger students to maintain interest in school," he said.
The Arviat Film Society was founded in 2010 as a mechanism to support growing youth participation in research and media projects, and to continue building on opportunities for youth and community engagement.
Today more than 20 students and educators are regular participants in the group's programming.
It can help youth get more creative and the skills we learn can lead to more job opportunities
AYV is brought to life through its nonprofit and education partners, educators and employees around the world. Since the program’s launch in 2006, nearly 100,000 youth have created media projects putting to use their newfound creative confidence.
"It can help youth get more creative and the skills we learn can lead to more job opportunities," said Grade 12 JAHS student Shelton Nipisar. "It would be great to see more Inuit youth get involved!"
TakingITGlobal is one of the world's leading networks of young people learning about, engaging with, and working towards tackling global challenges.
They recognize that lasting positive change can only be achieved when every member of society is actively involved in supporting young people reach his or her full potential. By bringing together Digital Youth Engagement, Global Education and Social Innovation programming, Taking IT Global seeks to empower youth and their allies to ensure every young person and their interest has a place to learn, grow and flourish.
We thank Adobe Youth Voices, the Adobe Foundation and Taking IT Global for supporting our schools, students and community to create with confidence! We'd also very much like to thank John Arnalukjuak High School and A/V teacher Gord Billard and everyone who came out for a great evening of creativity, mentorship and technology training!
Every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Arviat Film Society members meet at John Arnalukjuak High School to take part in Adobe Youth Voices and Arviat Film Society training.
All students, educators and interested community members are welcome to join us! To learn more about how you can get involved here in Arviat, talk to Gord at the High School or Jamie at the College!
